Community Crime Patrol Returns

After a ten month hiatus, the Community Crime Patrol (CCP) has returned to the streets of the University District with their citizen patrol teams. CCP was established in the University District over thirty years ago to address off-campus neighborhood safety concerns. Since then their operations have expanded to eight other neighborhoods throughout Columbus.

A renewed committment to off-campus safety as a result of a recommendation from The Ohio State University’s Taskforce on Community Safety & Wellness, has boosted CCP’s presence in the area. CCP patrollers will be out Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings from 6:00pm to 2:00am the following day. On Saturdays where there is a football game, CCP will patrol from 2:00pm to 2:00am. CCP’s duties include:

  • Monitoring for safety concerns and reporting them to the appropriate authority

  • Identifying city of Columbus service needs and submitting requests

  • Communicating with Columbus Police Department on crime trends and wanted individuals

  • Assisting the public with information and other concerns

Another important role that CCP will serve is to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the off-campus community. Patrol teams will be watching out for residences who are violating the Together as Buckeye Pledge. Houses that are having gatherings of more than ten individuals, not practicing social distancing, and not wearing masks will be reported to the OSU Office of Student Conduct for further investigation.

After contact the Columbus Police Department, property owners and managers may contact CCP to request security checks in off-campus areas with there have been observed upticks in crime. Please call 614-291-4262.

CCP along with the citizen patrollers from the University District Special Improvement District offer a multi-layered approach to creating a safe environment for University District businesses and residents. For more information about CCP and it’s program, contact Ellen Moore Grffin, Executive Director at ellen@communitycrimepatrol.org or 614-291-4262.
