Sustainable Options for Move Out/Move In
Furniture Bank of Central Ohio Is Participating to Collect Reusable Furniture Donations
Ohio State University students moving to and from off-campus housing before this fall semester can drop off recyclables and donate furniture and other households items at multiple neighborhood locations in the second year of a sustainability partnership between the City of Columbus, The Ohio State University Office of Student Life and the University District Organization.
This time, Furniture Bank of Central Ohio is participating to collect reusable furniture, small appliances and household items for families in need. Other collection services provided by the Columbus Division of Refuse Collection during move out/move in include temporary dumpster and drop-off collection of recyclables and bulk items not suitable for reuse.
When the city added recycling collection for the first time in 2022, students dropped off more than 6 tons of cardboard to divert it from the landfill. The sustainability services provided during move out/move in offer convenience to students and encourage reduce, reuse and recycle for a healthier environment.
“The city hopes to build on the success we had last year with students taking advantage of our expanded services to go green and reuse and recycle rather than unnecessarily landfilling items,” said Jennifer L. Gallagher, Director of the Columbus Department of Public Service. “Reducing the volume of waste and waste-generated greenhouse gas emissions benefits everyone in our community.”
The temporary Refuse Collection dumpsters and drop-off locations for bulk trash collection will be in place at 15 off-campus sites from Saturday, July 29, through Monday, August 14. Recycling dumpsters will be available at four of those sites.
In addition, Furniture Bank donations may be made at three of the locations from July 29 through August 1. See their donation standards at https://furniturebankcoh.org/donate-furniture/.
“The university appreciates the collaboration of our many partners to provide sustainability focused efforts,” said Rochelle Toth, Community Outreach and Engagement Manager at Ohio State’s Office of Student Life. “Involving our students not only prepares them to be sustainable citizens now and in the future, but also helps divert items from the landfills, having a positive impact on our entire community.”
"Many of the furniture pieces we see in the University District during move out/move in are still in good condition,” said Nora Gerber, Executive Director of the University District Organization. “This makes the new Furniture Bank donation sites a fantastic solution to redirect these items from the landfill to Columbus residents in need. We’re excited about this additional sustainable service and grateful for the ongoing collaboration with our partners to make this initiative a success."
This list identifies the Refuse Collection dumpster and drop-off locations available from July 29 through August 14 for bulk trash disposal of larger items such as furniture, mattresses and rugs; for recyclables collection; and where suitable Furniture Bank donations can be dropped off from July 29 through August 1.
