On May 18th, City Council officially approved the reauthorization of the University District Special Improvement District (S.I.D.) continuing much needed clean services and safety patrols to High Street adjacent to Ohio State Univeristy’s campus.

Established in 2015, the S.I.D. is a mechanism for property owners to pool resources and engage in collective efforts. It funds a wide variety of district-wide services including sidewalk cleaning, supplemental security, homeless outreach, and beautification projects. The S.I.D. controlled by a nonprofit board of trustees made up of property owners.

Since July of 2016, the University District SID has provided cleaning, safety, beautification and outreach services along High Street from East 7th Avenue to Northwood Avenue. Property owners have identified these services as being successful in improving the safety and appearance of the district, which has facilitated the reauthorization and an increase in funds being collected for services.

A total of $475,000 per year will be pooled by property owners in the SID, increasing its budget by 35% over former levels. These increased funds will allow for the hiring of more patrollers and provide greater assistance in neighborhood clean up efforts. They will also provide more opportunities for beautification projects, like public art.

Services under the new agreement will last from 2021 through 2026. Learn more about the University District Special Improvement District here.
